sabbatical, lower case

I think I’m going to take a sabbatical. I’ve written for more than three years about Life on the Farm. I think it is a good life. Like Scott Nearing said, it may not be THE good life, but it is A good life, and frankly I haven’t seen example of any better. If you are interested in improving your life in this direction, I think there is plenty of fodder here. Or ask a question.

We’ll see what comes. It isn’t like I’m going anywhere or doing anything majorly different.

Ok, I'll bite.:)
I'm reading Jeavons, thanks to you and thinking "holy shit, do I really have to double dig the whole dang mess of land???"

Then I go back to baby steps and one year at a time and it doesn't seem like so much. I struggle with whether all that intensive preparation is really necessary but if what he says is true (and I believe him) then I really CAN grow enough food on this small space.

My main worry? I'm starting with year one...NEXT growing season. Part of me wants to do more, the other part knows that if I don't work my way up it will quickly seem like too much.

I guess I don't have a question so much as a big, deep, SIGH.

So there it is.

Hey CG--will miss your postings, but look forward to your return. All the best with new job and with the ongoing facts of life on the farm. Your writing has been an ongoing inspiration and source of guidance for our own fumblings...

but but but I already read it all!

Ren, there are alternatives to double digging everything. And there are pros and cons to everything. Some people swear by deep mulching, no tilling/digging at all. We find a combination of the two works best -- some digging (but not so deep) to prep most beds, and lots of mulch and organic material add in (and ashes and limestone sand).

And I'm not, like, going anywhere.

You hurry on back. Figures. You take off when I return.

Stay strong.

We'll leave the porch light on.

Hey...I just put you on my favorites list. Feeling rejected and abandoned ...lol

Jeavons says double dig. Fukuoka says don't dig. Kmoo rubs his forehead and reaches for an aspirin.

Gawd...that's exactly it. I read the square foot method, then the lasagne method, then Jeavons and methinks I will go insane.

Our "wallermelons" did really fabulous with hand-dug about 1 foot down and a bunch of good stuff mixed in.

So we'll try this and that and learn and grow and see what happens.

I hope you'll still post occasionally CG. I'd miss it if you didn't. Plus, I need constant inspiration at this point.;)

I have found your blog interesting. I just added you to my favorites. I graduated from Texas A&M w/ a Poultry Science degree and worked for Tyson in a processing plant for four years when I got out of school (It has been quite a while now). I got a kick out of your "evisceration" post. That was as good of a demonstration that I have seen.

Well thanks p&s. When people think it is gross that we kill what meat we eat (mostly anyways), I sometimes think to say something on the order of that I know that fecal matter didn't get spilled all over my meat -- what do they know about theirs?

And Ren, have you read fukuoka yet? He does shit balls with melons and squash and just throws them around in likely looking places and sees what grows. I found some great acorn squash one year in the animal's field. Of course, that was a year WITH water, not like this one with no water.

"shit balls"
You are way more poetic than fukuoka. kmoo

No water and HOT to boot. I really hope this isn't a long lasting pattern. ugh.

I needs me a well.

CG said...

was I too plain kmoo??? (I'm laughing -- I do that with language sometimes)

And ren, a well runs dry as well as a stream. I heard today that Atlanta could be out of water in a year. While a year is a long time away, still . . .

Too plain?... absolutely not. simple is better.

Dear CG-

Your life on the farm is definitely a very good life and I too see no example of anything better.

I will always be an admirer of your outspoken honesty, and, if you take too long of a sabbatical, I am one of those who will miss you most.

But I understand, I've been on a bit of a blogging decline myself after nearly three years of steady diatribe.

As far as I'm concerned, you and Eleutheros are the most right-living people I've discovered in blogland, and I really don't know how you've both found so much time to spend at the computer.

But I admire the two of you tremendously and probably can't measure the effects you've both had on my perception.

You are an awesome woman CG!

Go where your heart takes you...

Well, darn! I just discovered your blog. It looks like you live an absolutely fascinating life.

One of my homeschooling friends ran a little organic farm. I created an organic coop before the last of the cooperatives warehouses died our for the homeschoolers in my area and used to make the drive to visit her farm to get eggs, chicken, and beef for distribution and to help out. She worked so hard all the time but loved it.

I'm very sorry about the death of your mother in September.

Best wishes on all your future endeavors and sorry I caught your blog at the end of it!

Laura

hey laura, we have about three laura's on here so you if you visit more, you might want to identify which one you are. I've looked a little at your blog, thanks to your e-mail to me about someone using my e-mail but I don't know what I can do about it. Anyway, this isn't the end of this blog, just a sabbatical, and your blog is very interesting, thought provoking.

No need to do anything unless it becomes a nuisance for you (if they are doing the same thing at several blogs). You can contact the provider of the IP address and let them know they are using your identity without your permission.

I set the IP address as SPAM on my blog so all comments are deleted and they shouldn't be able to post to my blog anymore. Just wanted to make sure I was right that it wasn't you before I did so.
