"Damn I'm Good"
My hero uncle had been out of high school for 45 years when his class had their first ever reunion in 1978. He and his wife came down and stayed at our house for the weekend festivities. When he came back, we couldn't wait to hear his report.
"Those people are so OLD!" he said in all seriousness and with some real horror.
My algebra teacher had graduated with him and I asked him what he thought of her. "She looked like a bitty," he said, pleasing me to my bones.
He looked up, stood up tall and straight, sucked in his belly and said, "I'm sure glad I didn't get as old as they did." Somehow he hadn't.
I vowed I wouldn't either.
